ELEVENTH SLOVENIAN - CROATIAN
CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC MEETING
in Bohinj, Slovenia
27 - 30 june 2002.
The 11th Slovenian-Croatian crystallographic meeting proved to be a nice example how you can join together science and pleasure. It was afterall a friendly scientific meeting. Sixty eight crystallographers predominantly from Croatia and Slovenia, have proved once again that we are able to keep a reasonable high scientific level and at the same time to maintain friendship inside our crystallographic community.
There have been five well presented plenary
lectures:
Prof. Dr. H. BOEHM (Mainz, Germany)
PHASE TRANSITIONS IN MODULATED STRUCTURES,
Prof. Dr. G. GIESTER (Vienna, Austria)
FIVE YEARS OF CCD X-RAY DATA COLLECTION AT VIENNA UNIVERSITY,
Prof. E.R.T. TIEKINK (Singapore, Singapore)
ADVENTURES IN ENGINEERING MOLECULAR SOLIDS,
Prof. Dr. D. MATKOVIC-CALOGOVIC (Zagreb, Croatia)
SOME PROTEIN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY EXAMPLES - A SMALL MOLECULE CRYSTALLOGRAPHERS VIEW,
Doc. Dr. B. MODEC (Ljubljana, Slovenia)
OXOMOLYBDENUM(V) CLUSTERS BUILT OF DINUCLEAR METAL-METAL BONDED UNITS
and 40 oral presentations (from 10 to 20 minutes), including also commercial presentations
by representatives of Bruker-Nonius, Anton Paar and Mikro-Polo.
The thanks are for all of the crystallographers from seven countries, who have attended this meeting. Plenary lectures have included modern topics from crystal engineering, protein structures to the practical use of modern instrumentation. Short presentations have included the crystallographic subjects of proteins, organic and organometallic structures, inorganic structures, coordination compounds, metallic alloys and oxides, minerals, powder diffraction, microporous material, zeolites etc.
Our thanks are also to our Honorary Chairmen, Academicians Professor Ljubo Golic (Ljubljana) and Professor Boris Kamenar (Zagreb), who started with our meetings in 1992 after the desintegration of Yugoslavia and maintained regular annual organisation of these meetings. The rainy excursion to the vast green forests of Pokljuka, the plateau in the Julian Alps was the one to be kept in our memory. It is the fact that the crystallographers from Slovenia and Croatia, with participants from other countries, have been gathering now for 11 years now, from 1992 onwards. There is an increasing impact of crystallography on science in our developing countries, as well as in the world.
We had a pleasure to be the host of the two co-editors of various crystallographic journals: Prof. E. Tillmanns (Vienna, Austria) and Prof. E.R.T. Tiekink (Singapore). Needless to say that Prof. E.R.T. Tiekink is one of the most prolific writer of the crystallographic papers (714 papers with 3274 citations, Web of Science, ISI).
The next year meeting will be organised in June 2003 at the National Park Plitvice in Croatia. There is an open invitation to all bona fide scientists and friends to attend the 12th Croatian-Slovenian Crystallographic Meeting. Welcome next year in Croatia. All additional informations from Prof. S. Popovic (Zagreb, Croatia).
FINAL WORDS OF PROF. S. POPOVIC (Zagreb, Croatia) Now it is my turn to say several words at the closing point of our meeting, on behalf of the honorary chairmen, Prof. Golič and Prof. Kamenar, on behalf of the co-chairmen and my friend Prof. Vane Leban, and on behalf of SCS and CCA. We are now to say good bye and good luck to each other. This meeting has taken part in a beautiful place, created by Nature, and I hope all of us have enjoyed our stay here. This meeting, I hope you share my opinion, has been a successful meeting, as the previous ones, scientifically and socially, offering a friendly and domestic atmosphere. We have listened to five very nice plenary lectures, concerning modern approaches in crystallography. More than forty short oral contributions have been presented with different but contemporary topics in crystallography, including both data acquisition and interpretation. I would like to express our gratitude to the general lecturers, and to all of you who have come here to attend this meeting. I would also like to express our thankfulness to the sponsors, who have helped to hold this meeting, because without treir help the meeting would not be possible. And, the Zagreb part of the Organizing Committee would like to express our gratitude to the Ljubljana part of the Committee, and especially to prof. Vane Leban, for the effort which has been done in preparation of the meeting. Also, we experienced a very interesting trip to the unspoiled and untouched natural beauty of the green Slovenia, the green heart of Europe. Now, we are thinking about the next meeting in Croatia. In order to compete the beauty ( if it is at all possible to do it ) of the Bohinj Lake, located in the Triglav National Park, we should also think about a national park, and about at least of two lakes. The choice is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, which includes sixteen lakes, where clear water falls from one lake to the next lake, offering a fascinating audio-visual beauty, where blue-green colour of water is in balance with the green woods, all created by the Mother Nature, protected by UNESCO as the wotld heritage. So, we cordially invite you to attend the 12th CRO-SLO CRYST MEETING, in the middle of June 2003, in the Plitvice Lakes National Park, again in a hotel with the same name as the place of the present meeting, the hotel Jezero ( the Lake). We would also appeal to you to bring your friends and coworkers, at home or in other countries, to attend the next meeting. At the end, thank you very much to all of you and have a happy and pleasant journey home.
Good bye and good luck until the next meeting in Croatia.
