THE TRENTA VALLEY
The beatiful Trenta Valley, from the emerald river to the summits of the mountains, this singularly marvelous
world has been the scene of cruel wars: weather-worn memorial plaques, numerous caverns and
trenches, rotted planking, steel fragments half-buried in scree, steps going up enormous rock-faces,
concrete foundations, now and then a bone (human or animal), a boot, an old ammunition pouch,
a cross, a battered helmet, rusty cartridges, a gun-carriage - in short anything that can remind
one of the senseless hatred and suffering of 1916, when in these parts the Austrian and Italian
armies faced each other, bleeding from violent attacks and counter-attacks, while down in the
valley the young Hemingway was witnessing scenes of horror and turning his bitter experience
into an inspiration for his famous novel A Farewell to Arms. Those mountains towering above
the Soca river (Isonzo in Italian) were destined to see twelve bloody battles, some of which are
counted among the hardest battles of the First World War. These mountains lining the Soca
Valley had long ago become a wall between the two worlds, but now the border will shortly disappear.
